Tiahuanaco Complex:

It is located 20 km south of Lake Titicaca in the territory of Bolivia. It was the capital of the Tiahuanaco culture, a beautiful archaeological complex where the remains of the building known as Kalasasaya and other important structures can be found, such as: Puma Punku, the Gate of the Sun, Monolith Ponce, Keri Cala, Putuni, Laka Kollu, and the pyramids Akapana and Wila Pukara, which served as residences for the priestly elite.

Many constructions of Tiahuanaco architecture have not been preserved due to the low resistance of adobe against the harsh climatic conditions in the highland region. Below, we will mention some of the most important places in the site.

Puma Punku:

It is a temple or monument that is part of Tiwanaku. This building is so unique in the way it was constructed, where you will find incredible stones with perfect right angles, almost smooth as glass, as if machines, tools, or even lasers were used, showing how ancient civilizations used modern technology.

Ceremonial Center:

An important construction measuring 126 m long by 117 m wide. Inside, there is a large sunken rectangular patio accessed by a staircase carved from a single six-step rock, passing through a monolithic gate, at the center of which is the "Stela" or "Monolith Ponce."

The Gate or Gate of the Sun:

It is located on the platform of Kalasasaya, the most important ceremonial temple of the Tiahuanaco archaeological complex. The large monolithic gate measures 3 m high by 3.75 m wide; its weight is estimated at 12 tons. The lintel has been carved from a single piece of an andesite block and is fully sculpted in high and flat relief, with the Staff God represented at the center.

The Akapana Pyramid, also known as the Sacred Mountain of Tiahuanaco:

​It is a large, partially eroded seven-level pyramid measuring about 200 meters wide by 17 meters high. It is close to the Subterranean Temple and Kalasasaya. Akapana is precisely oriented to the cardinal points.
